A strong password is a good first step, but setting up two-factor authentication adds another layer between other people and your data. If you do this, then access to your account is restricted only to people who have your password - and also access to the second level of authentication, which can take the form of a text message, an email, or even a paired app on your smartphone.

Some services offer all three modes of verification - others rely on one or the other method. Regardless, once your authenticator is set up, trying to log into your account results in a code being sent by the chosen method, and without this code, the account won't be accessed.

Gmail

Your Google account is probably the one you want to secure first. Not only is your email account a repository of all sorts of important information, but also, since our email ids are the default way to sign into Web services today, your Gmail account can also serve as a gateway to all your other accounts. To set up two-factor authentication, you need to take the following steps:

1. Go to Google Account Security and under Password, look for 2-step Verification.

2. Click setup. On the next page, click Start Set Up.

3. At the next page, sign in. In the box, enter your phone number.

4. Choose the mode by which you will receive the code > click Send code.

5. A six-digit code will arrive on your phone via text message or by a call. Enter the code on the website and click Verify > Next > Confirm.

Next, Google will ask you to reconnect all your apps and devices. If you've configured apps to access your Google account on any device, you will have to create a separate app password for each and sign in again. To do this, click Configure when Google prompts you to. Now select the app (click Other if it isn't mentioned) and device from drop-down menus and click Generate. Each code password you generate will only work for one app.

Google is offering users up to 1TB of free Drive storage as an incentive to garner more reviews on its mapping service.

The lure comes in the form of a update to its Local Guides program, which now rewards reviewers on a points scale. Reviewers can offer their take on cafes, restaurants and various other businesses in their area, which are then linked to the respective places on Google Maps.

The Local guides revamp now includes a five tier system which depends on how thorough the review is, so if you add pictures in addition to your take, it’s worth more points. Those who add new locations or fix outdated info can also earn points.

The prize that might is most attractive on the points scale is those that manage to earn over 200 points, thus reaching level 4, which entitles them to a 1TB upgrade to their Google Drive storage account. This would usually cost $9.99 a month, so to those with plenty of time on their hands, could be worth the 40 location reviews required to reach that level.

Guides that put in enough time to reach level 5 after accumulating 500 or more points gain a ‘Google insider’ status and will get to test new products before they’re released to the public.

Here’s how the point scale looks:

Level 1 (0-4 points): You can enter contests for free Google stuff.

Level 2 (5-49 points): Early access to new Google product features

Level 3 (50-199 points): Get a ‘Local Guides’ badge in Google Maps

Level 4 (200-499 points): 1TB Google Drive storage

Level 5 (500 points or more): You can apply to go to an annual Google Local Guides event.

Google hopes that this new tier points system will encourage Local Guides users to make more frequent contributions.

Get Android L Keyboard and Google Home Launcher on any Android Device!

Even though Android L developer preview has been making headlines for both the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 7 2013 it's unfortunate that those are the only two devices to get a supported Android L developer preview.

Luckily for anyone who doesn't own a Nexus 5 or Nexus 7 2013 we can now install the Android L keyboard and Google Home launcher on just about any Android device, phone or tablet. I guess Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 can't have all the fun! I didn't find any differences between the Kitkat and Android L Home launcher, but I added the files anyway.

This process is straight forward on how to get both the Android L keyboard and the Google Home launcher on an Android device since it's just installing APKs. Best of all, these procedures don't require any root at all (except for Nexus devices)!

Download Android L keyboard and Google Home launcher using the links below. Also follow the step by step guide located below the download links!!

If you already have a version of Google Keyboard installed, uninstall it first!
Nexus users! - Nexus 4, Nexus 7 2012, etc. You must be rooted and uninstall the stock Google keyboard to install the Android L keyboard on your Nexus device!
1. Go into Settings > Security > and check mark "Unknown sources".
2. Download LatinImeGoogle_noroot.apk to your phone using the download link located at bottom.
3. Locate and tap on the APK file, you can use an app like File Manger to help you locate the APK.
4. Tap on "Install" and then "Done".
5. Go into Settings > Language and input > and select "Google Keyboard".
6. Now tap on the gear symbol next to "Google Keyboard" > Advanced settings > and change Color scheme to "Material".

You now have Android L keyboard on your Android phone or tablet!

How to Install Android L Home Launcher:
1. Go into Settings > Security > and check mark "Unknown sources".
2. Download Velvet.apk and LatinImeGoogle_noroot.apk using the download links located at bottom.
3. Locate and tap on Velvet.apk, you can use an app like File Manger to help you locate the APK.
4. Tap on "Install" and then "Done".
5. Repeat steps 3-4 with GoogleHome.apk.
You're done, you now have Android L Google Home launcher on your Android device!
